ARTIST STATEMENT

My work centers on body dysmorphia and perceived flaws, with a special interest in how perspectives shift as we progress through life. Perceived flaws may be superficial or character-related regardless, the grip they have can mark an entire phase of life as positive or negative. The way we view ourselves at any given time is powerful. Societal pressure can often make people see flaws in themselves where none exist. My work is an exploration of physical characteristics, thoughts, and stages of life that myself or others have found flaws within. Within my work, I explore the varying states of mind that accompany the stages of growing up, looking back on some with fondness and others with difficulty. In my pieces, I employ exaggeration of traits or focal areas through enlargement, distortion or substitution, giving visual form to feelings difficult to put into words. When reflected on through the creation of these art pieces after time and personal growth, I can now reconcile with past versions of myself and find beauty in past insecurities.
